About the Conductor Jenny Hansell

JENNY HANSELL read Music at the University of Durham, having previously been a pupil at Horsham High School for Girls. For many years her career combined performing with teaching Music in schools, but she now works as a freelance soprano, private teacher, vocal coach and conductor.

Jenny has conducted and coached a variety of ensembles, both vocal and instrumental, in venues as different and as far apart as school halls and the cathedral of Grahamstown, South Africa. In addition to her work with Horsham Chamber Choir, Jenny directs a local parish church choir, conducts Cantilena, a small chamber choir of female voices, and runs vocal workout classes for choral singers as well as teaching singing privately.

As a solo singer she specialises in the performance of Baroque and Classical oratorio and vocal chamber music. As well as singing the masterpieces of the period she has also given first modern performances of innumerable re-discovered works, particularly by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, a selection of whose motets she recorded for Cologne Radio with her colleagues in the ensemble Sospiri. She has also performed a number of more contemporary works such as Vaughan Williams’s Ten Blake Songs and Copland’s In the beginning.

Performing has taken her throughout Britain and to South Africa, France, the Czech Republic, Holland, Germany, Austria and Slovenia, and she has made three visits to Israel for concerts of medieval songs, music by Purcell, and Messiah.
